Cumulus Founded
Following the Deepwater Horizon tragedy, Shell establishes an innovation center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to leverage expertise from aerospace and other industries to improve the safety and reliability of mission-critical systems. Our founding team identifies an opportunity to improve the accuracy and quality of bolted joint assembly and maintenance in high temperature and high pressure environments.

The prototype for our first product, Smart Torque System™ (STS), is developed. After several successful large-scale deployments, our team spins out from Shell and raises its first round of venture capital investment. Cumulus is founded, and STS is brought to market.

U.S. Patent
For a second time, Cumulus is recognized by the IoT Breakthrough Awards Program. We are selected as the “IoT Startup of the Year” for 2020.

Cumulus responds to COVID-19 pandemic by helping our customers navigate the unique challenges of work suspension, ongoing project demands, and phased re-openings. Our technology allows for “zero loss of work” for clients as our cloud-based platform provides real-time, remote visibility, progress tracking, and quality assurance.
Cumulus technology is used to complete the first fully remote offshore turnaround for a facility’s planned maintenance event. Remote quality assurance and work approval results in zero delay or postponement for clients despite the pandemic.

Cumulus is granted its first U.S. patent for our first commercial product, the Smart Torque System™.

EPA Pollution Preventer
WorkFlow™ Launched
Cumulus is added to the EPA’s Natural Gas STAR Program directory as a service provider whose technology can facilitate methane emission reduction.

Cumulus officially expands beyond bolted joints with the launch of its second commercial product, Cumulus WorkFlow™. The comprehensive platform is capable of digitizing virtually any work activity through user-configured workflows. Smart Torque System™ is integrated into the platform as a user-elected workflow for bolted joint assembly and maintenance. Operations continue to expand globally with over 1,000,000 work completions to date on five continents.
